Molly

Wolly

In terms of farm work, I've learned a few new skills since coming to the Sato farm. Number one is weeding a rice field. Somehow when I saw people in rice fields in movies and photos, I always assumed they were knee deep in just water, but that's not the case. It's mostly mud. In an organic rice field like the ones we have here, you go in completely bare foot and instantly find yourself wading through about 18 inches of mud, which is both a blessing and a curse. It's kind of good because it puts you closer to the surface where the rice and the weeds are, but it also makes moving even more tiring than usual. Also, you can't kneel down to work in a rice field, obviously, so the backs of your legs get an amazing workout. I now understand why all of the old people in Asia walk around bent at a 90 degree angle. But other than that, weeding a rice field is significantly easier than weeding a normal field, because all you have to do is kind of muss your hands around in the mud like you're looking for something, and all the grass and other stuff gets dislodged. And the tadpoles. A healthy rice field is always chock full of frogs and tadpoles. I also learned how to plant new rice sprouts, but I'm not very good at it. I still have a hard time understanding where exactly I need to put them. Kentarou-san goes in there and starts sticking them down in what looks like a completely willy-nilly manner to me, but it clearly has some reason behind it to him. I hope that someday I can become a rice planting pro like that, too.
