ウーファー・サムエル

 サムエルはスウェーデンからの初めてのウーファーであった。大変おとなしい物静かな青年で、少々日本語が解る。パソコンが仕事らしいので、今回は全然違った体験である。将来スウェーデンの大学院に通うそうです。

一度目の日本は京都で、来日は２度目だそうです。帰国する前に日本の文化を学びたいということで、ウーファーになったそうです。私は決まって、「なぜ我が家を選んだのか？」を聞くことにしています。すると、「自然が美しいから」と答えた。そして日本は暑いと言いました。そういうことより何を感じたか、学んだかを話してほしかった。

日本に来ても毎日会社（？）のまわりは外国人ばかりで、会話も英語だけだったそうです。我が家とは全く違っています。

我が家の手伝いは、玄米を炒る仕事、丸鋸による薪切り、そして畑の草取り、田んぼの除草である。

一つだけ失敗してしまった。里芋の周辺の草を取るように手本を見せたのだが、なんと里芋そのものを刈ってしまった。この時、私は彼とは一緒にその場に居られない事情の来客があった。

 そして、彼も中学生と一緒に田んぼに入った。その時中学生は、サムエルを素晴らしい人だ、と言っていた。ドクダミをとっていただきましたが草もごみも一緒で大変と家内がこぼしていました。指導が悪いと私は苦情を言われます。

このように私は、さまざまなウーファーによって色々なことを体験させていただいているのであります。親善大使の役割も果たしているのでないかと思います。ウーファーの受け入れは家内がいないと受け入れはできません。しかし家内も感動があるからしているのであります。

After staying in Tokyo for 5 months, I wanted to experience a different side of Japan before going back to my home country, Sweden. I found this place through WWOOF Japan, and thought that it looked very nice. When I arrived here with the train, it was pitch dark and raining, but I was warm-heartedly welcomed by Kentaro-san and his wife. The village of Toyomi is indeed very small, but hosts many nice places that I have got to experience by staying with Kentaro-san, including a wood fire heated bath house, overlooking a deep river. My duties have included preparing Japanese brown rice (genmae), cooking Swedish food for lunch and helping prepare the bath fire. I will stay here for many more days, but I have already had a lot of good food and seen a completely new side of Japan.

It’s been four days since I got off the train at Toyomi station. Four filled with good food and exhausting activities. The high temperature combined with the humidity really makes for some sweaty days, especially when working on the rice field as we did today. Since yesterday, I have not been the only outside guest here in Toyomi; four high school students from Tokyo arrived by bus on Wednesday night. After sunset, we all went out to see fireflies playing in the rice fields. It was really beautiful, like stars in the grass. Today, the four students and I worked on the rice fields. It was surprisingly fun to walk barefooted in the muddy soil, sometimes knee deep in water, but also very tough, especially with the high sun. Of course, the day would not be complete without a bath in the onsen. I know that’s definitely one thing I will miss.
