Day 5 - Friends from Agamachi to Tokyo (and beyond)

Today was a little out of the ordinary. I was instructed to arrive at Sato-san and Makiko-san's home by 3:30am in order to leave at 4, our destination; Saitama city. Sato-san was scheduled to be doing a lecture there on his life experiences at 10am, and it was a 4-hour drive away. Fortunately, we had Makiko-san at the wheel - who it turns out is as good a driver as she is a cook - so we arrived with time to spare, and were even able to stop for breakfast along the way!Upon arrival, we met a few family friends in front of the building, and the crowd steadily grew until there about 20 of us standing around talking.

The lecture itself was fascinating. It began with Sato-san's friend, Outsuka-san, saying a short piece on his life and contribution to the community in Agamachi and beyond. Then began the main section, which consisted of Sato-san speak on his experiences to date, from overcoming cancer by transforming his lifestyle, to his various visits to France and Greece and the art he created there. He spoke with confidence, conviction and, seemingly, great humour (judging by the laughs from the audience), though I'm afraid the jokes in Japanese escaped me. Equally capturing was the picture slideshow that accompanied each part of his talk. Perhaps most touching was the way Sato-san talked about the friends he'd made abroad, and I was struck by how much the emphasis of the lecture was on the wonderful people he's met over his life, rather than focussing on his art.

This was in fact the strongest message I took away from the day, be it talking to his very varied and interesting friends at lunch afterwards about London and my travels in Japan, or watching videos of him sitting and chatting with the locals in a restaurant in Greece. At the start of the car journey back I commented on this and Sato-san agreed enthusiastically, "Friends from Agamachi to Tokyo!" Seeing the way he treasures human companionship, and how he's gathered people around him wherever he's been, I'd have to disagree with him - friends throughout Japan, and around the world!
